Reeling and Healing Midwest

October 2006 Reunion Retreat Recap

A Fish Bigger Than My Head?

The ride to the lodge on the Pere Marquette River was beautiful. What a gorgeous day! The vivid colors of the leaves, the intermittent rays of sunshine through the clouds, and the comfortable, not too crisp temperature only added to the anticipation of being on the river again and seeing fellow Reeling & Healing Midwest alums.

Trout, steelhead and salmon. All were in the river just waiting for us to test our skills and tempt them with some of the new flies picked up at the Pere Marquette River Lodge (thanks Frank!). The river was higher than usual, due to rains earlier in the week, but that did not deter us from venturing into the waters between Rainbow Rapids Landing and Sulac. Five and six-weight trout rods and a few eight-weight rods for steelhead and salmon were rigged up. Having learned more about the river's fish habitat and life cycles the first evening, we made it to the river and climbed right in by mid-day on Saturday. With flies on, we were casting away. Everyone learned a new cast - the double-spey! Some ventured out to fish on Sunday - no cold or drizzling rain was going to keep them out of the river.

From Lake Ann, Detroit, Muskegon and St. Joseph, MI to La Grange, IL - our group of 20 came from all over the State of Michigan and a few from the Chicago area. Everyone pitched in to assist with the meals. All provided entertainment and shared stories. We certainly enjoyed a few belly aches from the oodles of laughter!

Some highlights include those fresh-baked breads and goodies, the many food specialties that were available in endless supply, the look on Linda B.'s face when she learned what a steelhead and salmon actually looked like, the eagerness to covet the prizes of a fishing shirt, a sequined hat or a harvest wreath, and the expert wading technique of Lori C. Then there was the apple chuckin' across the river and into the woods. No one was too old to pull back a slingshot so far, eh?

This was our first October Reunion Retreat and it was memorable. Thank you for your participation, enthusiasm and courage to go somewhere new and learn more about fly fishing as well. It was an honor to share the river with you once more. I look forward to doing it again and again.

Here’s to renewed spirit and renewed hope.

FISH ON!
